The evening quickly shaped up to feel like one of the best nights of Damian’s life. He enjoyed the delicious pot pie the waitress brought him. It had flaky crust with big chunks of chicken and vegetables in a savory gravy. Hints of tarragon and lemon gave the sauce a unique flavor that could easily rank it among his favorite dishes. And he was pleased that Felicity seemed to enjoy her own meal just as much. They laughed over a second bottle of expensive wine they had with dessert. But as exceptional as the meal was, the best part was the woman he shared his time with.

After dinner, they walked around Beverly Hills for a bit, enjoying more conversation along with some coffee to sober themselves up. And he called for the limousine again.

“Would you mind if we drove to Santa Monica and checked out the beach? I’d love to see it at night,” Damian said.

“You’ve never been?”

“Well … not at night. There’s nothing as beautiful as the moon hanging over the water. Well … few things.” He took in the spectacular vision before him.

“I’m game.” She hooked her arm around his. “Let’s go.”

The limousine followed along and picked them up at a corner. They drove off, heading down Wilshire in a straight line toward the beach. When they got to the coast, the driver let them out at a patch of grassy lawn and palm trees that overlooked the ocean, just blocks from the Santa Monica Promenade. Damian had seen the place on television programs from the States and had longed to visit the singularly Californian locale for himself.

He still felt full from the meal and hardly wanted to stroll. Instead, he and Felicity chose a spot and leaned on a railing to view the perfect waves rolling to shore. She shivered in the chilly night air.

“Would you like my jacket?” he said.

“How gallant. I wouldn’t mind, if you don’t think you’ll freeze to death.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m used to cold weather.” He wrapped it around her shoulders but reached into the pocket. “Just let me get this first.”

Her eyes caught sight of the rectangular, velvet-covered shape. “What’s that?”

“A token of my affection. Here.”

He passed the box her way, and Felicity opened it, revealing a Rolex watch of white gold with tiny diamonds surrounding the face. The stones caught the moonlight with a sparkle. She stared at it without even taking it out.

“Go ahead,” Damian said. “You need to read the inscription.”

She finally pulled it out and flipped the timepiece over. Felicity struggled to read the writing etched on the back in the dim light. She pulled out some black glasses from her purse and slipped them on.

“Always remember you’re a star.” She looked at him. “Please tell me this isn’t real.”

“It’s definitely real, but don’t worry. I got it at an excellent price from a friend.”

She shook her head and pushed the box back. “Carl … it’s so sweet, but I can’t accept this.”

He resisted. “Of course you can.
